Quilty Pleasures

Karen Dougherty, Quilty Pleasures

Karen Dougherty is a textile artist, psychotherapist and psychoanalyst living in Amaranth, Ontario. For her, quilting and psychotherapy are similar arts, where fragments are integrated and worked through into a robust, functional whole.

Karen’s one-of-a-kind quilts and scarves are lovingly upcycled from wool and cashmere suiting samples, men’s cotton shirting samples, old jeans, vintage kimono, obi, and haori, old sugar sacks, and any other fabrics that require rescue, healing, and unifying. She draws her inspiration from places as diverse as traditional Japanese textile arts to primitive quilting to high fashion.
